Library catalogue unavailable afternoon of 28th August

The library catalogue will be unavailable from midday on 28th August for the rest of that day. It will be available again on 29th August, but may be running "at risk". This gap in service is necessary for major administrative changes to the catalogue data.

You can still search for items in the library's collections by searching COPAC, a joint catalogue of the holdings of over twenty top research universities and institutes. You can use the Main Search screen to restrict your searches to Liverpool stock only.

Important news for RefWorks users

If you have created a RefWorks user account with a username and password you created yourself, you need read no further. If you used your ATHENS account to set up your RefWorks user account, please read on.

Funding for the UK ATHENS authentication system has now ceased. Those RefWorks users who used their ATHENS details to set up their RefWorks account should send an email to libcontactelec@liv.ac.uk with your name and the email address you've used with RefWorks - library staff will then be able to re-set your username and password.

No-one will lose any of their references!

Access to Special Collections and Archives

Due to building work the Special Collections and Archives Reading Room will relocate from the basement to the first floor of the Grove Wing in the Sydney Jones Library from mid April until September 2008.

To allow for relocation the Reading Room will be closed from 17th to 22nd April inclusive.

From 23rd April onwards a temporary Reading Room with accommodation for five readers will be operated. However, those researchers intending to visit must contact us in advance to make an appointment and to supply reference numbers for any materials they wish to see.

It should be noted that due to the refurbishment of the lift materials will have to be hand-carried from the basement stores. Unfortunately, in practice, this means that most classes of material will be inaccessible.

Multi-volume sets
Maps

We shall endeavour to retrieve materials wherever possible, but without advance notice we will be unable to guarantee accommodation or delivery of materials.

Electronic book survey from Ebrary - iPods and T-shirts up for grabs

The library is working with ebrary to better understand e-book usage and needs among college and university students. We’d greatly appreciate it if you took a brief Student E-book Survey.

The survey should take less than 15 minutes to complete, and almost all the questions are optional.

To show appreciation for your time, you will be entered into a drawing for a FREE iPod of your choice. You pick the model, size and colour! Also, every 25th participant will receive a free T-shirt.

E-resources accessibility weekend 8-9 March

Major electrical work is being carried out over the weekend of Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th March. While Computing Services Division are minimising the disruption to services to the greatest degree they can, there is a possibility that library web pages, and the electronic resources available through them (including the library catalogue), may not be working fully at certain times during this weekend.

Advance notice - Sydney Jones Library closed 13th June - 16th June inclusive

This message is an advance notice that the need for electrical work will necessitate the closing of the Sydney Jones Library for a four day weekend after the end of the summer term. The Library will be closed Friday 13th June to Monday 16th June inclusive. The Harold Cohen Library will remain open as normal during this time.

National E-book survey - have your say (and maybe win £200 of Amazon vouchers)

E-books are of increasing importance in universities, but have still not been completely embedded in teaching and research. What ideas do you have about how e-books should develop.

The CIBER research group at University College London are currently running a survey to gather the opinions of students and teaching staff. The higher the response they get, the more likely we are to see e-books develop the way you want them to.

You can access the e-books survey for students or the e-books survey for teaching staff.

As an incentive, both surveys are offering a draw with a prize of £200 worth of Amazon vouchers for respondents who leave their university email address.

Mobile phones and Facebook - the library where you are

You can now access the library catalogue from your mobile phone, and use our resources within your Facebook profile thanks to new services introduced by the library.

For those of you on the move, and without access to the internet, we've introduced AirPAC. This service lets you search the catalogue with your mobile phone or other handheld device - useful if you're on the move, or deep in the library stacks and can't remember the classmark of the book you want! Enhancements in the future will increase the functionality beyond searching the catalogue.

For those of you who like to mix work and fun, you can add applications to your Facebook profile that allow you to search both the library catalogue and our core collections of ejournals and databases in MetaLib from within your Facebook profile. Additionally, similar widgets are also available for those of you who use the iGoogle and Netvibes RSS readers.

New Year, New Look Arts Team

Coinciding with the new calendar year, changes have been made to the subject responsibilities of the subject librarians within the Arts Team. From now on, responsibility for liaising with Arts Faculty Schools will be as follows:

Jo Ashley and Micaela Chandler will liaise with the Schools of English and Philosophy.

Jackie Pearce will liaise with the Schools of History and Music, and the Institute of Irish Studies.

Martin Wolf will liaise with the Schools of Archaeology, Classics & Egyptology, and Cultures, Languages & Area Studies.

If you have any queries regarding using information resources, collection development, information literacy training or general library issues, please feel free to contact your subject librarian. Off-campus access to electronic library resources

If you need to do research for essays and assignments whilst away from the University campus this Christmas vacation, you can still access the Library’s wide range of electronic resources from off-campus (even if you’re spending Christmas in New Zealand!). These resources include the databases and electronic journals you can access on-campus.

All you need is the following:
• An internet connection
• Your ordinary username and password, used to log into the student portal
• The Library website web address – www.liv.ac.uk/library

It is important that if you’re searching for electronic journals and other resources when off-campus, you do so via the links on the Library’s website. This is because these links are unique to the University, and identify you as a member of the University to the journal and database providers. If you just follow a link from Google or another search engine, the providers have no way of knowing that you belong to the University, and therefore may not grant you access.

When you follow a link to an electronic journal from the Library catalogue or the Electronic Library web pages from off-campus, you will be asked to log into something called EZProxy – all you need for this is your ordinary username and password. This will work for the vast majority of our electronic resources. In the small number of cases where this is not the case, fuller details are given on the Library website – look for the “Off-campus access” link on the Electronic Library web page.

If you’d like to access other applications, and the files on your M drive, then you can use the Windows Terminal Service. Software applications will run on a University server but appear as if they are running on your own PC. You can then access the Library’s electronic resources exactly as if on campus.

To do this, login to the WTS from http://wts.liv.ac.uk using your MWS username and password and then select Internet

Library refurbishment - issues affecting users during the Christmas / New Year period

We have been notified of developments relating to the continued refurbishment of the Grove Wing which will affect Library users over the Christmas period. Please see below for further information.

The second floor refurbishment is nearing completion. New PC desks are being delivered to the 2nd floor next week with other furniture to follow after Christmas.

PC access
The PCs will be moved out from the 1st floor during the week beginning 17th December and the desks will be decommissioned in order to begin the refurbishment of the 1st floor. Work will begin on installing the PCs on the 2nd floor after Christmas, although we have no definite date from CSD as yet.

There will be a time when there is no PC access on either the 1st or 2nd floor of the Grove Wing; this disruption is unavoidable, and we will work to keep the inconvenience to a minimum and direct users to other PC centres around campus.

Additional desks will be moved onto the ground floor of the Grove Wing to provide more study space during this period.

Books
The move of the books currently on the 1st floor will begin on Saturday 5th January and should be completed in two weeks. The books will continue to be available to users, apart from when the actual rows are being moved. During the exam period, Library staff will retrieve this material for users, if required. Some material may be temporarily re-located to the 1st floor of the Abercromby Wing, owing to the re-spacing of shelving over in the Grove Wing. The catalogue will be updated to accurately reflect the stock moves.

Students are encouraged to get the books they need before the Christmas vacation. Normal loan books will be issued for the Christmas vacation from Friday 30th November, due back on Wednesday 9th January.

Sydney Jones Library closing early 27th and 28th November

Access to electronic books

The Library subscribes to ebrary's Academic Complete collection of electronic books. The specific titles available within this collection vary from year to year (though the number of titles remains static). As it takes time to go through the catalogue records to remove these entries, you may sometimes encounter records for electronic books on the library catalogue that are no longer part of the collection (on the ebrary site you will see a page titled "Document Unavailable).

Many of the titles that have been taken from the Academic Complete collection are now available through other electronic book services, so wherever possible electronic access has been preserved.

Trial access to American History and Culture Online: Sabin Americana, 1500-1926

American History and Culture Online: Sabin Americana,1500-1926.

This contains works about the Americas published not only in the United States but from across the globe. This collection of important and many hard-to-find primary sources opens a window onto the society, politics, culture, religious beliefs, and contemporary opinions both at home and abroad that covers a period of more than 400 years.

Medieval and Early Modern Sources Online (MEMSO) now available

The Medieval and Early Modern Sources Online (MEMSO) database is now available from the Library web pages. This resources contains searchable editions of British and Irish (including foreign and colonial papers) printed editions of manuscript source material for the period c. 1000 to c. 1800.

It is available directly from the alphabetical list of databases on the Databases page, and can be cross-searched with other history resources in the appropriate sections of the MetaLib resources for History.

We have a trial of 5 databases on the Iter Gateway until 31st December 2007.

Iter, meaning a journey or a path in Latin, is a not-for-profit research project with partners in Toronto (the headquarters), New York City, and Tempe. Iter was created for the advancement of learning in the study and teaching of the Middle Ages and Renaissance (400-1700) through the development of online resources.

Sydney Jones Library - Abercromby Wing now open

The Sydney Jones Library is now open again. Go into the Sydney Jones Library through the new entrance in the Abercromby Wing (created from the former Senate House; entrance at the Chatham Street end of the building). Many of the Library's services are now delivered in the Abercromby Wing (taking books out and returning them to the Library; self issue; reference collection; short loan; photocopiers, etc.). Subject Librarians, who can assist you with your research, are also based in the Abercromby Wing.

There have been improvements to the short loan area, which is now open access - you can go into the short loan area and select the items you want from the shelves. In response to user feedback, the loan period of short loan items has now been increased.

The 'old' Sydney Jones Library is now the Grove Wing of the new Sydney Jones Library. Most of the Library's books and periodicals, and the Special Collections and Archives, remain in the Grove Wing. Access to the Grove Wing is through the newly-constructed link building.

The next stage of the Sydney Jones Library Project sees the refurbishment of the Grove Wing. The Ground Floor of the Grove Wing is now closed for refurbishment. For the time being, you get to the Grove Wing from the Abercromby Wing by using the Link at levels 1 or 2.

Sydney Jones Library - closed Saturday 21st July

Further important news on changes to Library services in mid-August

Most library staff and front-line services will be moving into the newly refurbished Abercromby Wing over the weekend of 10th August 2007. The book stock currently located on the ground floor of the Sydney Jones will also be moved. To enable the staff move to take place the Library will close at 6pm on Thursday 9th August and we plan to re-open at 8.30am on Wednesday 15th August.

Although the Special Collections and Archives reading room in the basement will be unaffected by the move it will also be closed as there will be no access through the building. Special Collections and Archives staff will deal with e-mails and telephone queries as usual throughout this period.

Library staff in the Sydney Jones will make every effort to answer emails on weekdays during the closure period. If you wish to contact the Library by phone then please call the Harold Cohen Library: 0151-794-5411 or 5412

There will inevitably be some disruption for users as materials are transferred to their new locations in the week beginning 6th August. It may be necessary for a user to request an item from a sequence which is being moved. Library staff will retrieve these items as quickly as possible but unfortunately, in some cases, they may not be immediately available. We apologise for any disruption caused and we will update signage to direct users to the new locations.

Visiting other university libraries during the summer

The Sydney Jones Library here at the University of Liverpool is not the only library undergoing extensive building works and / or refurbishments. Summer is the traditional time for major works to university libraries (for example, the University of Warwick library is undergoing extensive re-modelling, and the main library at University College London will see some collections inaccessible as building works are undertaken).

As such, if you intend to visit another university library during the next few months, you're advised to ring ahead or check their websites to ensure the material or services you want are available. The University of Exeter provides a listing of UK academic libraries that may help you with this.

Trial access to Keesing's Record of World Events Online

Those of you studying modern history may wish to have a look at Keesing's Record Of World Events Online. Keesing's provides monthly reports on the world's most important political, social and economic events. The online version goes back to the first report, published in 1931.

The Library is providing trial access to this resource up until 4th July. If you would like to try it out and leave a comment about its usefulness, go to the Keesing's trial on the Library's e-resources blog.

Date set for major move of Library staff and resources

As most of you will know, a project is underway to refurbish the former Senate House to become a new wing of the Sydney Jones Library. The former Senate House will be known as the Abercromby Wing, and the current building the Grove Wing.

A date has now been set for the move of Library staff and resources, such as the short loan collection, into the Abercromby Wing. This is the weekend of the 10th August. This will necessitate the closure of the Sydney Jones Library at 6pm on Thursday 9th August, with the Library re-opening Wednesday 15th August.

Further details will be posted on the Library website nearer the dates to ensure that all users of the Library are aware of developments.

Trial access to Medieval and Early Modern Sources Online (MEMSO)

The Library has set up a trial to Medieval and Early Modern Sources Online (MEMSO). This contains searchable versions of documents such as:

The Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, of the Reign of Henry VIII
The Calendars of Patent Rolls (c. 1150-1509)
The Calendar of State Papers, Colonial (America, West Indies, India, Persia and Japan) (1574-1706)

New History Resource - Eighteenth Century Official Parliamentary Publications Portal, 1688-1834

There is now a slight change in the way that cover images displayed in the library catalogue link to further information about the book.

The small cover image is now a live link to all the additional information held (may include: Table of Contents; Summary; Larger image of the cover). To access the information you must simply select the appropriate line in the pop-up window.

You need to ensure that pop-ups are enabled - one visit to http://syndetics.com will sort this problem.

Archaeology Library

OPAC enhancements

'My Record Feeds' is an enhancement to the suite of OPAC features we introduced in the summer as 'Your Library Record'. It allows users to subscribe to RSS news feeds from their Library record in the same way that you subscribe to feeds from the BBC or newspaper sites. Our feeds provide timely information to users when any of the following events
occur:-

- Materials ready for pickup on hold shelf
- Materials due soon (i.e. in the next seven days)
- Materials due today
- Materials overdue
- Materials booked tomorrow
- Materials recalled
- New fines or fees (incurred in the last 24 hours)

Subscribe to My Record Feeds by clicking on the link in Your Library Record. If your browser does not support Live Bookmarks, copy the URL from the link in your record (right-click > copy shortcut) and paste it into a feed reader, such as Bloglines (http://www.bloglines.com ).
Once you have subscribed, your feed will appear as Your Library Record News in your browser or feed reader. Your news feed will then be updated as soon as any of the above events occur in your record. The feed contains a title and a link, eg. Materials ready for pickup on hold shelf. The link takes you directly to the relevant section of Your Library Record to see the full details. You will be asked to log in to Your Library Record at this point, if you have not already done so.
N.B. My Record Feeds cannot be accessed via the OPAC terminals - you need a normal internet browser to subscribe to or view your feeds.
